Are 3D Printed Planters Safe for Plants?

We get asked this all the time—and the short answer is: yes, absolutely!
At Simpler Days, we’re not just here to make cute and quirky planters. We care about your plants' health just as much as we care about their pots looking great on your shelf. So let’s dig into it: what exactly are 3D printed planters made of, and how do they hold up for real plant lovers?

🌽 What Is PLA Filament?

All of our 3D printed planters are made using PLA, which stands for Polylactic Acid. Despite the technical name, it’s actually made from renewable, plant-based sources like corn starch or sugarcane.

Here’s why we love PLA:

•It’s biodegradable under the right conditions

• It’s non-toxic and safe for use around plants, pets, and people

• It gives a smooth, clean finish that's lightweight and strong

This material is great for indoor planters—plus, it’s earth-friendly, which fits right in with our mission to keep things simple, sustainable, and beautiful.

What About Drainage?

Let’s be honest: the cutest planter in the world won’t help your plant if the roots are drowning. That’s why:

• Most of our planters come with built-in drainage holes

• We can add drainage upon request

• Some models even include matching saucers or trays

If you’re a plant parent who tends to overwater (no shame!), drainage is your new best friend.

Are They Painted or Printed in Color?

Both! Some of our planters are printed in beautiful solid-color PLA filaments—available in natural tones, bright pops, or even glow-in-the-dark options.

Others are hand-painted in-house using non-toxic acrylic paints, sealed with a protective finish to maintain color without harming your plant.

What Kinds of Plants Work Best in 3D Printed Planters?

Our planters are perfect for:

Small herbs or starter cuttings

PLA isn’t meant for outdoor use in direct sunlight long-term (it can warp under intense heat), so we recommend indoor or shaded outdoor use for longevity.
