You might even find yourself sitting down for dinner at the Cotton Patch and realizing that you are, somehow, the only person in the room who didn't get the pajama memo.

The Polar Express has arrived in Palestine.
A Train With a Long History
Long before families started boarding trains in pajamas on their way to the North Pole, the railroad was part of the history and development of East Texas.
Today, the Texas State Railroad carries passengers through the Piney Woods between Palestine and Rusk, offering a chance to experience an old-fashioned kind of travel that feels wonderfully out of step with the hurry of modern life.
The Palestine Depot is where many of those adventures begin.
And then, every holiday season, something pretty remarkable happens.
The train becomes the Polar Express.
When the Piney Woods Become the North Pole
The Polar Express Train Ride has become one of the signature holiday experiences in Palestine.
Families board the train at the Palestine Depot and settle in for a journey inspired by the beloved Christmas story. Hot chocolate and cookies are served aboard the train, the story comes to life, and the journey continues toward the North Pole, where Santa and his elves await.
And yes...
You're supposed to wear pajamas.
In fact, the railroad encourages it.
Apparently, a very large percentage of the people who come to town for the experience take that advice seriously. Recent reporting from Texas Co-op Power noted that the Polar Express season can bring 60,000 to 70,000 passengers during its roughly six-week holiday run.
That's a lot of pajamas.
The Funny Part About Living Here
For the people who live in Palestine, the Polar Express has become part of the rhythm of the season.
You can tell when the visitors have arrived.
They're the families wandering downtown in Christmas pajamas.
They're the kids bundled up and excited about the train.
They're the grandparents who came along for the experience.
And they're the people sitting in local restaurants, still dressed for their magical train ride.
It's honestly pretty funny.
Imagine sitting down at the Cotton Patch for dinner and looking around the room only to realize that you're surrounded by families wearing Christmas pajamas.
And you're just sitting there in regular clothes.
Clearly, you missed the memo.
But that's part of what makes it special.
The Polar Express isn't just something happening at the train depot.
For several weeks each year, it spills into the rest of Palestine.

And then Palestine gets to show them a little bit of itself.

It's easy to think of the Texas State Railroad as simply a tourist attraction.

Tens of thousands of people come through our community for these experiences, with the Polar Express season alone drawing an enormous number of visitors.
That means families who might never have had a reason to visit Palestine are suddenly spending a weekend here.
They're eating here.
They're shopping here.
They're staying here.
They're making memories here.
And some of them come back.
That's pretty powerful for a small East Texas town.
A New Stop Along the Trail
This fall and winter, Simpler Days will have a little home of its own at the Texas State Railroad gift center.
We're incredibly excited about it.
There's something fitting about having Simpler Days alongside an experience that encourages people to slow down, look out the window, spend time together, and make a memory.
That's what we love about the railroad.
It isn't just about getting somewhere.
It's about the journey.
And maybe that's why it feels like such a natural part of the Simpler Days Trail.
